I know. This site is coming together rather slow

May 7, 2023 by Richard J Tilley

I still have about more pre-written Star Trek posts to add to this site. I then plan on writing posts about Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, and The Orville. I also want to write about various science fiction books, but I am trying to figure out a way to do something more interesting than book reviews. I mostly read non-fiction. I will most likely end up working unexpectedly related non-fiction and scholarly articles into various post as I have with some pre-written Trek posts.

I also want to set up a companion site to this website using the domain scifi.earth. I tried Hubzilla, but it was awful, not to mention greatly flawed. I wish there were more ActivityPub options available. I would attempt to host my own minimalist site using the model this self-hosted site used. However, that is not an option as Cloudflare gets involved and Cloudfare does not support .earth TLD. I did attempt to set up Obsidian Publish as a companion to this site, which would have been perfect, but again, Cloudflare is required. Sigh. So far it seems like I might have to settle for TextPattern CMS, as it would be comparable to a minimalist supporting site to this website. I do hope to find something that fits better, though. My guess is that it will likely take until the end of this year to really get this website growing and moving in the direction that I want it to go. This site is just a side project. It is not central to my readings, studies, or writings. Still, I would like to get it off the ground and running.

I am aware that some people, mainly writers, like to make a distinction between the terms SciFi and Science Fiction. I am also aware that this domain name might be a turn off for them. That is fine. If there are those who feel the need to make the distinction that is their preference. I personally don’t see a need to be contentious about it.

Update: Just an FYI, those of you who develop websites, watch out for Obsidian Publish. They sent me some threatening emails quite some time after I canceled their services. It was extremely unprofessional. It all worked out in the end. I got a refund. I canceled my enrollment about an hour after I registered when I discovered they were incompatible. I don’t know what they were thinking.
